Birbal Betrays Himself.

Birbal was missing. He and the emperor had a quarrel and Birbal had stormed out of the palace vowing never to return.

Now Akbar missed him and wanted him back but no one knew where he was.

Then the emperor had a brainwave. He offered a reward of 1000 gold coins to any man who could come to the palace observing the following condition. The man had to walk in the sun without an umbrella but he had to be in the shade at the same time.

"Impossible," said the people.

Then a villager came carrying a string cot over his head and claimed the prize.

"I've walked in the sun but at the same time I was in the shade of the strings of the cot," he said.

It was a brilliant solution. On interrogation the villager confessed that the idea had been suggested to him by a man living with him.

"It could only be Birbal!" said the emperor, delighted.

Sure enough it was Birbal and he and the emperor had a joyous reunion

Bell the Cat

Bell The Cat

There was a grocery shop in a town. Plenty of mice lived in that grocery shop.Food was in plenty for them. They ate everything and spoiled all the bags. They also wasted the bread, biscuits and fruits of the shop.

The
grocer got really worried. So, he thought "I should buy a cat and let it stay at the grocery. Only then I can save my things."

He bought a nice, big fat cat and let him stay there. The cat had a nice time
hunting the mice and killing them. The mice could not move freely now. They were afraid that anytime the cat would eat them up.

The mice wanted to do something. They held a meeting and all of them tweeted "We must get rid of the cat. Can someone give a
suggestion"?

All the mice sat and brooded. A smart looking mouse stood up and said, "The cat moves softly. That is the problem. If we can
tie a bell around her neck, then things will be fine. We can know the movements of the cat".

“Yes, that is
answer,” stated all the mice. An old mouse slowly stood up and asked, "Who would tie the bell?" After some moments there was no one there toanswer this question.

MORAL : Empty solutions are of no worth.

Wise counting

Wise Counting.

Emperor Akbar was in the habit of putting riddles and puzzles to his courtiers. He often asked questions which were strange and witty. It took much wisdom to answer these questions.

Once he asked a very strange question. The courtiers were dumb folded by his question.

Akbar glanced at his courtiers. As he looked, one by one the heads began to hang low in search of an answer. It was at this moment that Birbal entered the courtyard. Birbal who knew the nature of the emperor quickly grasped the situation and asked, "May I know the question so that I can try for an answer".

Akbar said, "How many crows are there in this city?"

Without even a moment's thought, Birbal replied "There are fifty thousand five hundred and eighty nine crows, my lord".

"How can you be so sure?” asked Akbar.

Birbal said, "Make you men count, My lord. If you find more crows it means some have come to visit their relatives here. If you find less number of crows it means some have gone to visit their relatives elsewhere".

Akbar was pleased very much by Birbal's wit.

MORAL : A witty answer will serve its purpose.

TRUST YOUR PARENTS GOD WILL BLESS YOU

Long ago there lived a Brahman (a cast in Hindu religion) and his wife in a small village. They had been married for many years but still did not have any children. They prayed to all gods to grant them the pleasure of having their own child.

After some time the Brahman’s wife gave birth to a young one. But alas it was not a human child but a snake. Every one in the village, and the couple too, were shocked.

Many advised the couple to kill the snake as it could not be their child. But the brahman’s wife could not bear to part with her ‘son’. After all, the snake was her child and she was his mother. So the snake lived on with the couple as their son.

The Brahman’s wife loved her snake son very much and she bathed and clothed him with great love and care. She fed him with her own hands and made a cozy bed for her son to sleep on.

Soon the snake son grew older. He was still much loved by his mother. When his mother attended a marriage in the neighborhood she wished for her snake son’s marriage too. But alas! Who will offer his daughter to be a snake’s wife?

One day the Brahman came home and saw his wife crying bitterly. He enquired of her, “Why do you cry so, dear wife?” But got no reply from his still crying wife. “What ails you, dear? Do tell me,” the Brahman urged.

“I know the love and affection you show for me and my son is all but false. You do not care at all for my son. If you did, you would be looking for a bride for him. He is of a marriageable age now.”

“Have you gone crazy? Who will ever give a girl in marriage to a snake?” the Brahman asked. This only made the mother to cry even louder and bitterly. The Brahman reluctantly agreed to look for a bride for his snake son.

The Brahman went to many cities and towns looking for a bride, but no one found it fit to marry his daughter to a snake. At last he visited a friend in a nearby city. The friend received him heartily and asked the Brahman why he looked so worried. The Brahman said he was in search of a bride for his son.

“Why, it is simple. You can take my daughter to be your son’s wife,” exclaimed the friend. “My daughter is beautiful and cultured and just the right age for marriage. She will bring happiness to your family.” “I think you should first see my son,” urged the Brahman. “Oh, no need to see him. I know you and your wife very well. I hereby permit you to take away my daughter to be your son’s bride.”

The Brahman came back to his village with his friend’s daughter. The brahman’s wife was delighted and proceeded to start the marriage preparations. The village elders went to meet the girl and suggested that she should not marry a snake.

The girl replied, “I appreciate your sympathy and concern but I shall not be a lie for my father’s promise to this Brahman. I will surely marry his son. If I agree to your views I would be going against my father’s wishes. If the Brahman’s son is a snake, then he shall still be my husband.”

The next day the girl married the Brahman’s snake son. The girl was a happy bride. She loved and respected her husband with all her heart. The snake still slept in a box of his own.

One night, when the girl got ready to sleep on her bed, she saw a handsome young man sitting on her bed. She was afraid of the stranger and started to run, but the young man called her, “Do not fear me, for I am your wedded husband.”

The girl did not believe him at all. Soon the handsome young man turned himself into the snake the girl had married. The again he became the young man she had seen then. The girl was now very happy to find a handsome and loving husband. This secret meeting between the girl and her husband continued every night when every one in the house had retired for sleep.

One night, the Brahman passed by the girl’s room and heard a young man’s voice from her room. He started to keep a watch on his son and his wife. One night he happened to see his snake son changing into a handsome youth. The Brahman at once entered the room and picked up the snake skin shed by the youth. He took it and threw it into the fire where it burned to ashes.

The youth then addressed the Brahman, “I thank you from the depth of my heart. You have freed me of a curse. I was to remain a snake until my snake body was destroyed without my asking anyone to do so. Today, O Father, I can be your true son. I shall remain so for the rest of my life.”

The Brahman, his wife and the youth’s wife were delighted at this event. They all lived together as a happy family.

NEVER LEAVE FRIENDS

Once there lived a donkey, on an island. Whole day, he used to roam around here and there on the island. Soon he got bored of it and thought of going to some new place. All his friends asked him not to do so but he didn't pay any attention to their words.

He swam to another island. It was full of green grass. He made new friends over there. In a few days, he became fat.

One day, a farmer saw him and caught him. He took the donkey to his house. Now the donkey had to work hard the whole day. The farmer didn't even give him enough to eat.

One day, the donkey got an opportunity and fled from the farmer's house. He went back to his old island and decided not to leave his friends again who had given him right advice.

Nobody believes a Liar

Once a mischievous boy lived in a village that stood in the feet of a hill. One day he thought of having fun at the cost of his fellow-villagers.

Standing on a high rock, he shouted at the top of his voice, "Lion! Lion! Come, save me."

The villagers heard the shout and ran to help him. But when they reached there, they could see no lion and the boy was perfectly all right. The boy laughed at the villagers saying, "No Lion ; I did it only for fun."

The villagers got highly annoyed and came back with an air of anger.

Few days later the boy repeated the whole act. Again the villagers went to his rescue but were duped again. Now they decided not to be fooled by him anymore.

Unfortunately, one day, the lion really came there. Now the boy shouted "Lion! Lion! as loud as he could". But nobody came to help him out.

The lion attacked the boy. The boy struggled hard to save himself but within few minutes, the beast killed him.

So, once a liar, always a liar.

United we stand; divided we fall

Once upon a time three sons were engaged in merchantile business under the supervision of their father. They were very rich. Each son was proficient in his own department.

If one was good in sales, the other one was competent in purchases and similarly the third one in finance.

Unluckily, one day the father got bed ridden and the sons decided to divide the business under the fallacy that each of them was experts in their own way and can handle their individual business solely.

The father was glum and grumpy with their decision but was helpless and unfortunately the separation took place.

As a result three of them became each other's competitors. With the passage of time, they started having huge losses in their respective businesses. They tried all possible ways to succeed but the situation became worse.

Then they came to their father for a piece of advice. The father said "when you all were doing the business jointly, the business ran successfully. But it was not any one of you responsible for the success of the business rather traits of all three of you put together made the business successful".

The sons realized their mistake & got reunited. So we conclude that disunity always ruins.

Slow and steady wins the race

Once upon a time there was a hare roaming near a lake in a forest. Suddenly he saw a tortoise and mocked at him saying - "Hurry up, you slow coach! Don't you find life very dull taking so long to cover a few yards? I could have run to the other side of the lake by now."

The tortoise felt teased and dared the hare to a race. The race was to be through the wood to a fixed goal.

The hare agreed laughingly. In a few minutes he was away and out of sight.

"What a funny race it is!" he said to himself, "I am already half -way through. But it is too-too cold; why not have a nap in the warm sunshine?"

The tortoise walked steadily on and on. In a short time, he passed by the sleeping hare.

The hare slept  far longer then he had intended. When he woke up at last, he looked around in surprise and said to himself," Not even a sigh of the poor tortoise anywhere so far; I had better trot along and finish the race."

The hare ran to the goal. He was amazed to see all the animals cheering the tortoise that had arrived just a minute earlier. how ashamed he felt indeed!

Moral : Slow and steady wins the race

Think twice before you act

Once upon a time there lived two frogs in a marsh. They were very happy with their lot there.

But as the hot summer approached the marsh began to dry up. In a few days, the marsh got totally dry. So, the frogs decided to leave that place and look out for some other shelter for themselves and reached a deep well. They sat on the edge of the well and peeped inside it. It had a lot of water in it.

One of the frogs got so overjoyed to see the water that it at once said, "This well looks quite a fit place for us to live. It will be cool and safe inside. Let's jump in.

" The other frog was wise enough and replied, "Not so soon, my friend! We left the marsh when it had dried up. So, first think how we shall come out of this well if it gets dry.

The first frog was speechless, as he had realized that one must think before taking any step.

Moral stories for kids

One beautiful spring morning, a merchant loaded his donkey with bags of salt to go to the market in order to sell them. The merchant and his donkey were walking along together. They had not walked far when they reached a river on the road.

Unfortunately, the donkey slipped and fell into the river and noticed that the bags of salt loaded on his back became lighter.

There was nothing the merchant could do, except return home where he loaded his donkey with more bags of salt. As they reached the slippery riverbank, now deliberately, the donkey fell into the river and wasted all the bags of salt on its back again.

The merchant quickly discovered the donkey’s trick. He then returned home again but re-loaded his donkey with bags of sponges.

The foolish, tricky donkey again set on its way. On reaching the river he again fell into the water. But instead of the load becoming lighter, it became heavier.

The merchant laughed at him and said: “You foolish donkey, your trick had been discovered, you should know that, those who are too clever sometimes over reach themselves.”
